Louise and Ray Nelson are two of the most generous people you could
ever meet. We met them in California when we learned about their music
organization, Guitars Not Guns. GNG is a nonprofit volunteer
organization that started in 2000. There is no paid staff. They
provide guitars and music lessons to foster kids, at-risk teens,
and other underprivileged children. The program is provided at no
cost to GNG students.
GNG is a much needed self-esteem building outlet that helps young
people resist substance abuse, gang involvement, violence, and
criminal activity. When we met Louise and Ray, they only had a few
GNG chapters in the state of California. They eventually moved to
Georgia and continued their wonderful work.
The still growing GNG program has expanded; it now has 19 chapters
in 12 states and in Canada. So far it has served over 4000 young
people. Please visit the GNG website to learn more. There may be a
GNG chapter in your community, or you may decide to start a chapter.
To be affiliated with GNG is rewarding.
The average cost for an eight-week course for ten students is
about $1,000. That includes beginner guitars, student and teacher
manuals, tuners, picks, spare strings, etc. It also includes a
graduation party. Students who complete the eight-week course
may keep their guitar, many take a more advanced eight-week
second course, and some students take a third course.
If you cannot volunteer to help with a GNG chapter, perhaps you
can make a financial contribution. Every dollar you can donate
is needed. We urge you to help support this worthy organization.

Whatever your standing in life, the most important thing is
behaving in ways that help other people. It's the same with
music. I am a servant of the music, and if I get caught up in
