The Northern California Bluegrass Society was founded in 1982 as the Santa Cruz Bluegrass Society and is still known by that name in the greater Santa Cruz Area. The name was changed in 1999 to reflect the organization's true geographic scope. The Society serves the San Francisco Bay Area, the Monterey Bay Area, and all of Northern California.
